Tamil movie Koozhaankal Review

This event-based movie is based on a simple road travel of a man and his son who is of about 7 years of age.

One of the positive things in this movie is that it does not determine anything out of the events happening in the movie, instead, it lets us the audience to have our own perceptions. Moreover, the movie has been portrayed as there can be no negative assumptions/perceptions.

For example, a bunch of pebbles are shown inside a cub board and the last one is kept by the boy from his mouth. From this scene, we can imagine that all those pebbles have been collected by the boy or some of them by his mother while their walk on the same road earlier. On the other hand, it could have been collected all at one shot by the boy or by his mother.

Another example is, there is a Golusu ( Ankle Jewel ) sound played while the father character walks on the road alone, that can be a real girl or a myth in audience mind. Those who feel its a real girl will get the scene like the father character gets lust on the girl. On the other hand, for those who felt its a myth may get horror feel that, something next may happen to the father character even though he gets a minor injury on his finger immediately.

As it is a road travel movie, it says many things on the go like,

Depth of the relationship between the kid and his aunt who is the wife of his mother's brother. Even though the shot about this does not last more than 2 minutes, it explains why the boy hates to live in his grandmother house who tends to treat that boy like a god of her but likes to stay with his father even though he beats him often.

Exploring how irresponsible the main lead role of the movie is that he does not bother about many working opportunities on his walking way to his wife house. Some of those opportunities are, cutting wood and selling to houses for stove, helping the people to fetch water from a tiny natural fountain, buying things from Madurai city to his village etc.,

There is a shot shown this movie where a quarrel between 2 men happens and the camera movies in between those 2 men with a piece of intimidating background music. For me, I was expecting a murder scene, but the camera was marching toward the last back seat of the bus where a lady is sitting with a baby. With the sounds of quarrel, the baby awakes and starts crying. Following by that, the lady goes down the bus and finds a silent place under the hot sun to feed milk for the baby and she does it.

There are composed scenes to show that the father does not see his own name and the names of his family carved on a rock with stone by his own son, instead, he beats the son with anger so hard. The same scene exposes how much that small kid loves his family which includes his irresponsible father.

Even though the complete movie has the face of father which has rudity, violent actions and speeches, the small boy who comes with that man is the one who does heroic things silently. We can say the scene when he tears off the rupee notes and when he irritates his father who is in the middle of long walking under sun by flashing sunlight reflection on his back which will give irritation on his skin.

There is a scene showing how the father ( Ganapathy ) mood swings away from the anger he has on his wife to lust when he listens to a Golusu ( jewel worn on leg ankle by Indian women ) sound in the middle of his lone journey by walk under hot sun. But somehow this scene has a confusion whether the sound of Golusu was real or a myth only to the sense of that Ganapathy character.

Even though most of the running time of this movie consists of mere walks of father and son, if we look carefully at the background of any scene, some things will be happening. For example in the scene when Ganapathy walks from the street corner to the mother house of Shanthi, we can see some ladies doing household works and some of them doing some work for their business and a man was also shown as working. For me, it was like a slap on people who are roaming around the streets with alcohol without any works.

Yet another beauty of this movie is, how the pebble stones have been shown in short to explain that the whole road journey is not happening for the first time in the life of this small family containing 4 members.

In fact if we remove all the other things covered on the movie and if we see its skeleton, the story of the movie is the revenge of a small boy on his father.

Note : A long walk scene was placed in the movie Nanpakal Nerathu Mayakkam which was released in the year 2022.
